Security-Informed Safety for CPS
Educational resources linking cyber security and safety in cyber-physical systems
About the Project
Security-Informed Safety for Cyber-Physical Systems is an educational resource developed through a CyBOK-funded project to support cyber security and safety education across higher education and professional training. The project addresses an important challenge in modern cyber-physical systems: cyber security incidents can influence physical processes, operational decisions, and human behaviour in ways that create safety hazards.
Using realistic case studies from water treatment, railway signalling, maritime navigation, smart manufacturing, and healthcare, the project provides videos, student worksheets, instructor packs, and teaching materials that help learners understand the relationships between cyber security, safety, resilience, human factors, and operational decision-making. The resources are designed to support undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, professional development, and wider public understanding of Security-Informed Safety.

The 3D visual scenes in the educational videos were created using generative AI tools based on prompts developed by the project team. The generated 3D visualisations were reviewed and refined through multiple iterations to ensure they accurately represented the intended technical scenarios and educational objectives. The final videos combine these AI-generated 3D visualisations with original 2D animations, narration, and editing. All technical content, scripts, diagrams, learning materials, and the final videos were reviewed and verified by the project author before publication.
